How You Can Help

Adopting

No dogs are ever as grateful as those who have been rescued and now have a better life.

To find out more about WSSH’s adoption process and obtain an application, refer to the Adoption Process section of this web-site.

Donate Funds
As a non-profit, volunteer run rescue organization, we are always in need of funds. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact our Treasurer. We’ll make sure you get a receipt – your donation is 100% tax deductible.
Fostering

You will not be given just a dog directly out of a shelter. We first bring the dogs in to our WSSH base, vet them, evaluate them, and decided which foster home is most appropriate for that specific dog. You are never stuck if your circumstances change and you need your foster dog. We will bring them as soon as possible, often that same day.

If it was not for Foster Homes, many Sammy’s would be left behind. Don’t count on someone else being there to do this. We need your help! To obtain an application to be a Foster Home, visit our forms section of the web-site.

Home Checks

It is very important that we confirm that our rescue dogs will be placed in a safe environment. Home checks are an easy yet important task. If you stay for a bit and would not let your dog stay the week-end, the home is likely not the best fit for our Sammy’s either. Filling out the home visit evaluation is what will help get this family obtain the dog that is most appropriately suited for their home and lifestyle.

If you are interesting in volunteering to do home checks, please send an e-mail to main@wssh.org. We do have some guidelines to help you along, so don’t worry.

Other Ways to Help

There are many smaller things that can go a long way to help:

  • Bathe or Groom a new rescue Sammy. Many of our rescue dogs come from unbelievable situations and their coats are in horrible condition. We’ve even found nails embedded in fur!!
  • Come for a visit. The dogs at our home base don’t get to go on walks every day. Any socialization you can provide (walking, playing with them) will help speed up the reintegration process.
  • Donate office supplies such as stamps, envelopes, paper or ink jet cartridges.
  • Donate Heart worm preventatives.
  • Donate items to be sold at our once a year raffle or on eBay. We are focusing our eBay collection on easily recognizable brand name items which ship easily such as Coach or Brighton purses, briefcases, jewelry, etc. Donate food, treats, toys, brushes, leashes collars or stainless steel bowls.
  • Donate gas cards to help with the transporters gas costs.
  • Donate Equipment such as kennels, crates, and dog beds.
  • Volunteer to weekly or bi weekly check your local shelter for a Sammy in need

We can provide a receipt for donations. As a non-profit organization, your donation is 100% tax deductible.

If you are interesting in helping in any of the way, please send an e-mail to main@wssh.org.

Sponsor a Sammy

Can’t adopt? Can’t Foster? Funding is always a concern in the rescue world. Sponsoring a Sammy is a great way to help. We will post on our web site that you have sponsored (cared for all or a portion of his/her rescue costs) which ever Sammy you choose. You can keep in contact with their foster family and permanent family so that you can know how your sponsored Sammy is doing as much or as little as you choose. We would appreciate anything you would be willing to do to help out these babies!

If you are interesting in sponsoring a Sammy, please send an e-mail to main@wssh.org.

Transporting

One way or another, a dog has to get from the shelter to the base. Leaving this up to one person can be very tiring as well as wearing on both them and their vehicles. If a dog has 300 miles to travel and 5 people split the trip each person is only being asked to drive 60 miles. The job is much easier to complete with a large team!

If you are interesting in volunteering to transport, please send an e-mail to main@wssh.org.
